STEVE Jobs, one of the original “geeks” who helped launch global giant Apple from his garage, last night quit as chief executive of the conglomerate.
The 56-year-old Silicon Valley supremo had taken leave for a year as he battled pancreatic cancer before returning to work at Apple. But last night he announced he was stepping down.
Jobs said last night: “I’ve always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I’d be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come. I hereby resign as CEO of Apple.”
In an emotional speech at Stanford University in 2005, a year after he went public with his cancer battle, Jobs told students that doctors had given him just six months to live.
He said: "No one wants to die.
"Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it.
"And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
"Our time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice."
Along with fellow students Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne, Jobs left university in the mid-70s to create the computer system that helped change the world.
He will now be chairman of Apple. Tim Cook will take over as CEO.
